Glass recovery from new waste collection system with the MSort Basic

The customer

  • Danish customer from the recycling industry

The challenge

  • For years, Denmark has been considered a sustainability pioneer in the energy transition, in CO2 reduction targets and in waste policy. The country has set itself the goal of being waste-free by recycling all waste.
  • Danes must separate into 10 different waste fractions in private household waste collection. Nevertheless, all kinds of impurities also end up in the garbage garbage cans.
  • In order to achieve the above mentioned goal, a separation plant was installed on the island of Funen by our customer as a pilot project to separate ferrous and non-ferrous metals as well as light paper and plastic from the metal and glass stream of the plant.
  • At the end of the plant there was a fraction with a high glass content and various other impurities. This glass fraction could not be fed to the normal European glass recycling plants due to the high level of impurities.

The solution

  • The task was to remove the impurities to such an extent that the glass could be sent to the glass recyclers and recycled with a minimum of investment.
  • Mogensen devised a very simple process for this using a finger screen (bar sizer) and the new MSort Basic.
  • In the project, it became clear that another function was needed to remove particularly long pieces that could pass through the finger screen and block the sorter.
  • For this specific task, Mogensen developed a prototype finger screen with additional long piece removal.

The result

  • Production of a precursor from a waste stream that could not be recycled before.
  • Due to the process, the customer benefits from cost savings for the landfill and additionally increases the overall recycling rate.
  • The plant has been in operation since March 2021. The customer is testing the new process in long-term operation; if the pilot is successful, further installations are planned in Denmark.
